Sustainable and Functional
Polycarbonate Polyols

A New Paradigm

01 / Branched Polycarbonate Polyols for the new Standard in 2K Polyurethanes

Aliphatic polycarbonate diols have been available for several years and have proven benefits for improved toughness, strength and water resistance in elastomeric urethanes. Instrumental Polymer Technologies is the only commercial supplier of branched aliphatic polycarbonate polyols. These offer chemical resistance and hardness so polycarbonates can be used in 2K urethanes systems as a replacement for acrylic, polyester or fluorinated polyols.

02 / Biomimicry to Reduce Production Costs for Polycarbonate Polyols

Instrumental Polymer Technologies uses a biomimetic process for manufacturing polyols in which a "universal intermediate" is made in very large batches. This intermediate can quickly and easily be extended in a simple process to make a wide variety of branched and dendrimerica aliphatic polycarbonate polyols. This is how all the products on our brochure are made. However, unlike other suppliers of polyols, we are willing and able to design unique polyols specifically for your use. In fact, we can willing to sell you the intermediate for you to design and produce your own polycarbonate polyols. This sets a new trend in polyol manufacturing. Talk to us today about how we can work with you.

03 / Evolution Polymerization to Offer Benefits of Dendrimeric Polyols

Dendrimeric polyols offer lower viscosity in high solids coatings than typical branched polyols. Under a National Science Foundation SBIR grant, and in conjunction with the chemistry department of Princeton University, Instrumental Polymer Technologies designed an inexpensive method for producing dendrimeric shaped polycarbonate polyols. These are sold as our QUICKSTAR® polymers.

04 / Sustainability in Raw Material Sourcing

Almost all of our raw materials in our polycarbonate polyols can be sourced via fermentation of biomass. Consequently in the future as petrochemicals become more expensive or scarce, our polymers will continue to be affordable.

05 / "Snapset" Curing to Aid Adhesion in Bake Cure 2K Urethane Systems

Many of our polycarbonate polyols have our proprietary "Snapset Technology" in which upon heating during cure, a small amount of an alcohol is intramolecularly cleaved to yield a cyclic carbonate that binds to other hydroxyls or to a surface. This helps adhesion to 2K urethane baking enamels and enables the ability to use less isocyanate.

06 / Oxetane Crosslinkers as Nontoxic Crosslinkers for Water Based Emulsions

Instrumental Polymer Technologies also offers aliphatic polycarbonate dendrimers that contain oxetane functionality. Oxetanes are like epoxy (oxirane) rings, but with one more carbon. Unlike epoxy rings, the oxetane rings are stable in alkaline conditions or in the presence of amines. However, in acidic conditions the oxetane ring will open via an SN1 mechanism to react with carboxylic acids and form an ester linkage. In this way, our oxetane crosslinkers are ideal for crosslinking emulsions as a replacement for carbodiimides and aziridine. Their dendrimeric shape also enables them to replace flow agents in water based emulsions.

"Instrumental Polymer Technologies, a small business in Westlake (Village), California, is revolutionizing the polymer industry by developing environmentally friendly, low cost polymers by imitating nature's Primary Production."

Our Vision

OUR STORY

Instrumental Polymer Technologies,
(IP TECH) is a privately held company based in Los Angeles, California.
We are active in the research,
development, production and sales of aliphatic polycarbonate polyols and crosslinkers for use in the materials industry. IP TECH is the first company to supply branched and dendrimeric aliphatic polycarbonate polyols, providing a new standard in urethane performance but at a competitive price.

OUR GOAL

IP TECH is dedicated to designing and providing sustainably derived polymers
and dendrimers for a wide range of markets including coatings, adhesives and sealants (CASE) as well as medicine, electronics and cosmetics. Our goal is to improve the performance and functionality of our customer’s products, ensuring their products have a sustainable future, while also helping our environment.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

IP TECH grew from the need for new high performance polyols for use in
polyurethane coatings which meet
the tightening EPA regulations within the aviation coatings market. Standard
polyester and acrylic polyols were limited in performance and fluorinated polyols were too expensive. We launched polycarbonate polyols to achieve extreme performance at a reasonable cost. We have since then broadened our product line to include dendrimeric aliphatic polycarbonate polymers and crosslinkers for water based emulsions which can be used throughout the CASE materials industry. Our linear and branched polycarbonate polyols are marketed under the trade name PACAPOL®, our dendrimers as QUICKSTAR®.
